HORSFORD PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS
Could that be YOU? Why not give it a try? It’s a great way to meet and make new friends and there are a hundred and one ways in which you can get involved… We meet most Thursday evenings from 7.30 pm in the Committee Rooms, located in the Village Hall, Horsford, just outside Norwich. It would be GREAT to meet you!
The Horsford Players were begun in the early 1960s by a group of like-minded villagers, led by a school teacher who lived in Horsford. In January 1963 they put on their first play, ‘The Woman Upstairs’, in the Village Hall and, as the press release shows, it was received well. They have continued ever since with at least one play per year, mostly two, and occasionally three. To have this amount of continuity for well over 40 years is probably a record, in this area. Some of the original members still live in the village, and continue to support the group, and many of the Players remain part of the group for years; currently the longest-serving member has been part of the group since 1965. Several of the current members came as young romantic leads, and are now playing the older, character parts. There is, however a good turn-over of members, which helps to maintain everyone’s interest and allows the group to grow and develop. Presently it has the highest membership for many years, and subsequently there is a wider variety of plays which are possible. However, the perennial problem of membership is the need for men! Any age, blood group or ethnic origin would be welcomed, and especially if they wanted to act. Over the years a wide variety of plays have been produced, by a wide variety of producers. However, in a village the audience will often dictate the type of play. It has been found that the most appreciated plays are those that make people laugh, and so most of the plays produced by the Horsford Players have been comedies, farces, or pantomimes. There have been, however, notable exceptions, ‘A Letter for the General’ and Agatha Christie’s ‘The Hollow’, were voted different and interesting by the audience, but can we have a comedy back next time! The group has also been associated with festivals, where the adjudication has been accepted as a way of improving our performance. As well as making funds to put on the plays and keep running the group has always supported charities, especially those with special meaning for the members. In the last few years alone we have raised approximately £1400 for the Norfolk Heart Trust, and £1500 for Big C, in memory of family members of the group. We have also worked with the Lions Charity, helping to raise over £1000 with them. Usually, when performing for a charity night, a Variety Concert, or a Cheese and Wine with one-act play, has been arranged, which ensures a wider look at the talents of members and friends. So, after over forty years a friendly, forward-looking
group of like-minded people continue to meet and perform in Horsford Village
Hall. We always like to welcome new people with new ideas and talents…………could
we welcome you? |
